Puffing Billy Railway - Australia

Spruce Studios are an idependent film production company based in the South West of England, specalist in Travel and Transport films. All overseas titles are fully narrated by Bob Symes.The original Puffing Billy Railway was on of four low-cost narrow gauge ;lines constructed in the State of Victoria at the beginning of the last century to open up remote areas for settlement. Narrow gauge lines were relatively cheap to build and were suited to the rugged terrain. During the hay-day of operations there were over 200Km of track on the 4 narrow gauge lines in this region. this line closed in the 1950's, but due to local support this railway was subseqently restored and reopened to Menzies Creek in 1962, then to the town of Emerald in 1965 and exteneded to Lakeside a further 10 years later. It finally reopened to it's original terminus at gembrook in October 1998. A full 45 years after it had closed.Disc 1. Introduction to Melbourne and the State of Victoria, featuring Flinders Street Station and the electric trains. The steamin g of the engines at Belgrave. Double-header to Lakeside behind 14A and 8A then onward to Gembrook, featuring interviews, cab ride and historic black and white photographs of the line. Total running time 59 minutes.Disc 2. The return journey back to Belgrave, including the history of this narrow gauge line. Deleted scences of engine 14A at Belgrave and bonus footage of engine 6A orginally used in the opening black and white sequence. Total running time 54 minutes.A ride on this railway is a reminder of the days when steam was the only way to travel.
