Wharton management professor John Paul McDuffie, an expert on the auto industry, says he's "cautiously optimistic" that General Motors can now be transformed into a leaner and more competitive player on the global stage. In an interview with Knowledge@Wharton, he notes that there are many aspects of the plan that have to go just right -- not the least of which is avoiding the influence of politics in the company's marketplace decisions. But he says he is encouraged by the company's decision to close a plant in Wilmington, Del., even though it is Vice President Biden's hometown.
