Death And Surrender The Cost For Freedom In Burma
Three thousand died in pro-democracy demonstrations in Myanmar in the late 1980s. The killings were not enough to bring about democratic change to the troubled country.
Today, monks in Burma, along with a growing courageous civilian population, are facing down the military. As of this writing and recording, soldiers have delivered warning shots into the air and beaten back some 700 protesters. Other reports say that soldiers have lobbed tear gas into a temple complex and some 200 monks have been arrested.
Aung San Suu Kyi is reported to have been taken from house arrest to prison.
So what will it take to bring down military rule in Myanmar?
More death and ultimately capitulation from the ranks of the military, not the generals but the soldiers who are forced to kill their countrymen to keep the junta in power.
Ultimately, it will take a joining of power between Buddhist monks, and rank and file soldiers and officers to bring democracy to Burma.
In his latest podcast from Asia, Maxwell Book discusses the bleak options for the people striving for justice in Myanmar.
