Secrets Of Beijing???s Underground City
Last Monday marked the 18th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators. News Talk Asias Namaka Uesugi recently visited the historic landmark that Beijings government would rather forget.
In her latest pod cast for NewsTalkAsia.com, Namaka explores a little known place underneath Tiananmen Square known as The Underground City. The maze of tunnels which make up The Underground City reaches into five cities in China. The heart of the labyrinth is in Beijing.
Namaka explores the possible link between these tunnels and the attack on demonstrators in 1989. Troops clashing with democracy protestors were never seen going into the building at Tiananmen Square. However, they were seen coming out. It is rumored that they used the tunnels of The Underground City.
Originally commissioned by Chairman Mao in 1969 following the Sino-Soviet split, The Underground City has only been opened to the public since 2000. Join Namaka as she reveals this wondrous Beijing attraction that may have served in the crackdown on those who dreamed of bringing democracy to Red China.
